Animals Asia X A8 Design Open Call
Animals Asia X A8 Design Open Call
According to statistics, about 600 million stray animals are produced every day around the world, mainly due to abandonment and the unlimited reproduction of abandoned animals. The existence of stray animal shelters gives these animals a place to live, but only temporarily. Nowadays, people began to pay attention to this disadvantaged group and gradually realized that "adoption instead of buying" might become a solution. Regrettably, even so, the number of stray animals being adopted is far less than that of stray and abandoned animals.
My name is Dahuang
Xiaobai at the back is my "bro"
We used to live on the streets
But now Wuhan Small Animal Protection Base is our home
We daze together
We sleep together
Although my life is not bad now
But I still long for one that belongs to me:
a "Home"
To this end, we decided to do "something big"...

Palm Springs Animal Care Facility
PALM SPRINGS, UNITED STATES
The Palm Springs Animal Care Facility represents a unique public/private partnership between the City and Friends of the Shelter. Located on a 3 acre site across from the City’s Demuth Park, the exterior design reflects Palm Springs’ unique mid-century architectural heritage. Specific program components include a public oriented, Animal Community Center ambience featuring a central indoor/outdoor kennel design with public adoption access within an inviting garden courtyard equipped with misters and fabric shade structures.
The facility also includes cat community rooms, special canine “living rooms” adjacent to an indoor/outdoor socialization area, secure animal control work areas, a training room for educational and evening uses, and a fully equipped clinic for in-house medical procedures. The project has been designed as an equivalent “silver” LEED facility with a special emphasis on water conservation, where in recycled water from the adjacent sewage treatment plant is used for cleaning all animal areas and for landscape irrigation.

Collectief Noord Animal Shelter
MAATHEIDE&LOMMELSE,BELGIUM
On the border between the Maatheide Industrial Zone and the Nature Reserve (Lommelse Sahara), there is an animal-related building: an animal shelter and burial house. The area is an industrial site, but borders a nature reserve. Three ground floor building units give access to a U-shaped inner courtyard directed towards the landscape, while a three-layer cat tower directed towards the industrial site welcomes the visitor. The ground floor consists of a public reception area and a gallery along the inner courtyard, disclosing the dog kennels and care spaces. The inner courtyard, in turn, accommodates the encounters between new owners and animals, as well as school presentations and benefits.

Jill Robinson, MBE, Dr med vet hc, Hon LLD,
Founder and CEO, Animals Asia Foundation
Jill moved to Hong Kong in 1985 and soon joined the International Fund for Animal Welfare as their Asia Representative, running a number of animal protection programmes throughout Asia.
In 1998, Jill founded Animals Asia Foundation with the mission of further improving animal welfare and providing sanctuary for bears rescued from the bear bile industry. With the support of local governments, she and her team established two bear rescue centres – one in Chengdu, China and one just outside Hanoi, Vietnam – to provide rehabilitation and life-long care for hundreds of rescued bears.
Jill believes every “one life”, animal or human, is precious and worthy of respect. With this concept in mind, her philosophy is to work with local officials and the community to bring about positive and lasting change for animals. Jill pioneered animal therapy in Asia in 1991 when she created the Dr Dog programme, which today provides the healing power of a dog’s unconditional love to thousands of grateful recipients.
Jill’s contribution to animal welfare has been recognised with a number of awards. In 1995, she won the “Reader’s Digest” Hero for Today award. In July, 1998, she was made an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2010, she was one of 12 people given the “You Bring Charm to China” award at a ceremony by Phoenix Satellite Television and Tian Jin TV. In 2010, both Animals Asia’s China and Vietnam rescue centres were awarded the Carole Noon Award for Sanctuary Excellence and in 2014, they were accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries – the only sanctuaries in China and Vietnam to have received this honour.
