Description
Kenji Kawakami was born in Nara Prefecture, Japan in 1946. In 1992, Kenji Kawakami resigned to set up the Japan Treasure Tool Association, specializing in useless inventions. Since 1995, he has summarized these inventions into a series of books-"101 Japanese Inventions That Are Not Useless". In the book, every rare prop solves at least one problem, but it often creates a more comical problem. Behind every seemingly unattainable and funny invention conceals serious thinking about the future, as well as care for everyone, even small hobbies. Umbrellas that can collect rainwater; pillows that can stand and sleep; commuter benches that can sit on others in the subway; and prototypes of the earliest selfie sticks.

My collection: Japan's "not a collection of useless inventions" in the 1990s. Behind every seemingly unattainable and funny invention conceals serious thinking about the future, as well as care for everyone, even small hobbies. For example: umbrellas that can collect rainwater; pillows that can stand and sleep; commuter benches that can sit on others in the subway; and the earliest prototypes of selfie sticks. We can also find the original version of those funny tools in "Ouchi Detective Zero Announcement". This book often reminds me, from another perspective, what design is all about.

The "Design Research Laboratory" (DRL) of the Architectural League School of London has one characteristic of its research method: in the design, it minimizes human subjective judgments. By establishing a prototype, setting objective standards and principles, and systematically finding the optimal solution for the design. This iterative research method coincides somewhat with the working method of the Bridgewater Fund. The Bridgewater Fund establishes basic rules and uses weighted voting methods to systematically find the optimal plan for hedge funds. And teach this working method to AI for further optimization and execution. (This is also the pursuit of AA School). Ray Dalio also shared his 5-step principle to achieve his goals, which is worth learning. The design I pursue is also to set vision and goals, and to constantly approach the optimal solution through reasonable methods.

Description
The early architectural creations of Morphosis architect adopted a non-personal, rational modern architectural concept. The architecture from the 1990s to the present has manifested as abstract formal games, becoming illogical, unordered, and unconventional. The juxtaposition and mixing of the elements of heterogeneity. Through the introduction and analysis of the architectural thoughts and expressive techniques of Morphosis architect, the morphological art is interpreted.

Morphosis architect was founded in 1976. The official collection of works has six volumes according to different periods. This is the first book in this series. Comparing the first and latest volumes, you can be surprised to see the change and continuity of the design style. This is my favorite book, which records the firm's attempts when it was founded. This is also inspiring for our current architectural practice: architectural practice requires long efforts and accumulation to achieve the best state.

《Plywood: A Material Story》
Christopher Wilk
简介
Description
Exquisite, sustainable and ubiquitous, the value of wooden plywood far exceeds people's imagination. Their application range is very wide, from automobiles, construction, furniture, sculptures, trains, ships and airplanes. This attribute also makes the products made of wooden plywood unique, which is a fashion aesthetic, and many architectural pioneers and famous designers are very fond of using wooden plywood as the main material. This book is a full exploration of the design and use of wooden plywood, including technical, social and cultural history. Starting from the earliest examples of ancient Egypt, most of the stories took place from the 1930s to the present. The first is the prominent use in architecture, and the second is the post-war DIY culture centered on main materials. Although cheaper alternatives appeared in the 1960s, the use of wood plywood has undergone a revival since the 21st century, and designers have begun to appreciate its beauty, practicality and sustainable quality.

Multilayer board (or plywood) is a common material and is often ignored. It has a history of 150 years. Due to its excellent bearing capacity and bending performance, in addition to being used in common furniture, it has also been used as an aircraft material to produce all-wood aircraft. In 2018, the V&A Museum in London held a special multi-layer board exhibition. Because of this common material, there is a close connection with the future sustainable construction: the combination of multi-layer boards and CNC technology can realize digital customized houses; in recent years, the CLT commonly used in all-wood buildings is also based on the principle of multi-layer boards.

《Architecture: The Story of a Practice》
Dana Cuff
简介
Description
Although architecture is the fastest-growing profession in America, its private context remains shrouded in myth. In this book, Dana Cuff delves into the architect's everyday work world to uncover an intricate social art of design. The result is a new portrait of the profession that sheds light on what it means to become an architect, how design problems are construed and resolved, how clients and architects negotiate, and how design excellence is achieved.Dana Cuff has taught as a social scientist among architects and as an architect among social scientists. Her participant/observer studies for this book, carried out over the past decade, involved more than 200 individuals representing 80 different firms. She is Associate Professor of Architecture and Planning at the University of Southern California.

Ms. Dana Cuff is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. She studied sociology in her early years and later became an architect. She once selected 6 well-known firms and worked in each for a period of time: participating in all design activities, participating in discussions and meetings, interviewing, observing and recording the work process and habits of the firm. Finished the book called "Story of Architectural Practice". I think every architecture student should read this book. It clearly shows the essence of a design office. It also provides answers to many questions: What kind of firm is a commercial firm? What is considered non-commercial? What is the difference between the practice of the firm? Is it related to the way they work? What should the process of architectural practice be like? Is the relationship between Party A and Party B really incompatible? Unfortunately, there is currently no Chinese translation of this book. If I have the opportunity to translate a book, I will definitely choose this book.

Description
"Constructive Cultural Studies: On Construction Poetics in 19th and 20th Century Architecture (Revised Edition)" is Kenneth Frampton's succession to his classic "Modern Architecture-A Critical After "History", there is another great book that is highly anticipated, which will definitely have a profound impact on the discussion of the development of modern architecture. The concept of construction discussed by Frampton regards architecture as a craft of construction. It poses a powerful challenge to the mainstream ideas that are obsessed with postmodern art and presents a convincing and innovative approach to architecture. Indeed, Frampton’s rationale is that modern architecture is not only closely related to space and abstract form, but also to the same vital degree as structure and construction. Compose the ten chapters and postscripts of "Constructive Cultural Studies: On the Poetics of Construction in the 19th and 20th Century Architecture (Revised Edition)" to trace the roots, and strive to explore the development history of contemporary architectural forms as a structure and construction poetics . Frampton's close interpretation of historical materials of French, Germanic, and British architecture since the 18th century provides a solid theoretical framework for "Constructive Cultural Studies: On the Poetics of Construction in 19th and 20th Century Architecture (Revised Edition)" Base. He clearly explained how structural engineering and construction imagination are presented in the buildings of Perret, Wright, Kang, Scarpa, and Mies, and how the characteristics of construction forms and materials are used by these architects. Play a complementary role in the architectural performance. In addition, Frampton’s analysis also shows that the way these elements permeate an architect’s work also constitutes the basis for judging the architect’s overall architectural development. This is particularly prominent in Frampton’s analysis of the historical authority of Perret’s, Mies and Kahn’s architectural works and attitudes. In Frampton’s view, proactively exploring and constructing tradition is of vital importance to the development of future architectural forms, and it can also provide a new critical perspective for the discussion of modernity and the historical status of the "avant-garde" .

I especially recommend "Constructive Cultural Studies" translated by Mr. Wang Junyang. I won't say much about the original book, one of the must-read theoretical books on architecture. It is worth mentioning that after the architectural theory is translated into Chinese, it often becomes obscure. However, the original English text is often logically clear and easy to understand. Translation is very difficult: on the one hand, because Chinese and English vocabulary does not correspond one to one; on the other hand, readers also lack the English cultural context. It is rare to see the translation of English theory in this way, which is in line with Chinese reading habits. All proper nouns or names are marked with the original English text for easy reference and avoid misunderstandings. Cultural backgrounds that readers don’t understand are also marked. This is the result of the translator's efforts to translate.

《Atlas of Novel Tectonics》
Jesse Reiser
简介
Description
Architects Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto have been generating some of the most provocative thinking in the field for nearly twenty years. With "Atlas of Novel Tectonics", Reiser and Umemoto hone in on the many facets of architecture and illuminate their theories with great thought and simplicity. The Atlas is organized as an accumulation of short chapters that address the workings of matter and force material science, the lessons of art and architectural history, and the influence of architecture on culture (and vice versa). Reiser and Umemoto see architectural design as a series of problem situations, and each chapter is an argument devoted to a specific condition or case. Influenced by a wide range of fields and phenomena - Brillat Saverin's classic Physiology of Taste is one of their primary models - the authors provide a cross-section of thinking and inspiration. The result is both an elucidation of the concepts that guide Reiser and Umemoto through their own design process and a series of meditations on topics that have formed their own sense as architects. "Atlas of Novel Tectonics" offers an entirely fresh perspective on subjects that are generally taken for granted, and does so with a welcome punch and energy.

Today's computer-aided design technology helps architects break through Cartesian coordinates and create richer spaces and forms. Traditional construction elements: doors, windows, stairs, columns, beams, etc. What changes have taken place in the context of new technologies? Traditional construction topics: scale, material organization, etc. What new principles should there be? The author discusses these issues. Digital construction is still experimental, and many questions have no standard answers, but this book proposes meaningful exploration and thinking for the principles of digital construction.
