Grasshopper
Description
The compilation and writing of this book was done by Qi Pengyuan, the webmaster of the NCF Parametric Architecture Alliance, alone. The author has been engaged in online public welfare teaching and communication in the field of parameterization for 9 years, and at the same time has 6 years of practical engineering experience in the creation of first-line schemes. The content of this book is a systematic summary of the author's thinking about how to apply and teach parametric tools over the years. I believe that its advent can bring certain help whether it is for the initiation of parametric learning or for technical practitioners in this field. Because this book not only includes the basic popularization of software teaching, but also records the insights of a technical expert who has been engaged in design and creation practice in C+Z Studio for many years, and the crystallization of the organization of NCF parametric building alliance network technology exchanges.
Description
This book is specially written for users of Rhino and Grasshopper software. It discusses how to write Python programming language for geometric design in the environment of Rhino and Grasshopper. The GhPython component in the built-in Grasshopper parametric modeling tool in Rhino6 is used as the main tool. In recent years, users who have been unable to satisfy the existing parameterization tools continue to appear. After users have explored the Grasshopper components, and even the external components of Grasshopper, they naturally begin to be interested and concerned about the arithmetic logic behind the various functional components, and also want to try to develop their own customized functional components. Based on years of experience in parameter teaching, the two editors sorted out profound and simple cases, from understanding Python programming language, software environment introduction, calculation logic to algorithm design, from simple to complex. This is an introductory tutorial compiled for related users who want to go deeper into the algorithmic design method.

The first book about parameterization is actually two books. I think the two books should be tied together. In my past work, I often used parametric aided design software for design and research and development. My friends thought that I was very accomplished in parameterization, so I was often asked how to learn by myself. I discussed this issue with my instructor when I was studying abroad. The instructor thought that the development of parametric technology was too fast and the update was too fast. If you want to write a book on parametric design, from conception to completion, it may be technical Iterated again. But I think the two books I chose are very suitable for people who want to learn by themselves. One is about the basics of Grasshopper and the other is about GH Python.

Description
S.M.A.O is a contemporary Spanish architecture firm of the new generation. Their works do not win big or show off, but with their exploration of the spatial relationship and the external form of the building, they move people and make people think. Their works have profound ideas, have progressed at the height of history, and have immeasurable development prospects.

The second book is an old book. What is deep in my memory of this book is that when I read it again after many years, it suddenly pulled me back to college. I think the reason may be because the content of my work at the time was far from what I learned, and it has been a long time since I thought about space, proportion, point-line-to-face position, light-shadow relationship, and so on. When I read this book again three years ago, it made me doubt my work. I think for most architects, the works of S.M.A.O are something that architects must understand and learn during their design career, and they are worthy of careful reading.

The third book was hard to come by. I asked a junior fellow student to buy it from Edinburgh and mail it back to China. I mentioned in the previous article that I had doubts about my work, and this book made me not daring to do design for a long time. I often think about whether architecture should be rational or irrational? Are buildings without proportional relations still buildings? Did Le Corbusier borrow Palladian's proportions? Did Mies explain centrality clearly? With these questions, I did some research in combination with practice, and also wrote an article: "IMAGINATIONS FROM COLIN ROWE" to record my views. I think a book that can stimulate thinking must be a good book. Personally, this book also helped me clarify the direction of the future.

Description
This book was first published in 1949 as the 19th volume of "Warburg College Studies". The second edition was published by Alec Tiranti Co., Ltd. in 1952, and the publishing house subsequently published a revised third edition in 1962. This edition was republished by Academy Editions in 1962. In 1973, the Academy Editions Press re-labeled the picture of the book and inserted it directly into the text. The fourth edition of the book was released with the full version of this new format. This version contains some lectures and articles on proportions that Professor Witker has not yet published. These texts were generously provided to us by his widow. Appendix 4 is an excerpt and edited article based on different manuscripts of Witker.

The fourth book Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism is an exploration after reviewing the third book. The era of humanism is a beautiful era, where humanity is more dignified and culture is more tolerant. Designers care about the relationship between human body and proportion, mathematics and geometry, integrity and similarity, etc. This is an ideal era. The book tells about the proportional relationship between architecture and music, which is also a direction I want to try in the future. This book is also worth reading.

Description
This is a theoretical work on deconstructionism, which focuses on the author's unique thinking on the "deconstruction" method in the Japanese context in the vortex of postmodern thought in the 1980s. The author believes that there is a general tendency of "formalization" in the humanities and natural sciences in the 20th century in the West, but this "formalist" revolution has not only failed to truly subvert traditional metaphysics, but has made all kinds of thinking try to fall into the abyss of "structural". The way out lies in the reconstruction of the "deconstructivism" method as a critical theory on the basis of Marx's "social externality" and Wittgenstein's "*other" concepts through "secular criticism".

Fundamentally, this book does not seem to have much to do with architecture. I think its connotation is more philosophical and a higher-level thinking mode. It is the author's thinking on the "deconstruction" method. The "architecture" mentioned in the book is not a real architecture, but a "structure" that has been deconstructed and criticized. This book was recommended by Teacher Wang Hai at an exchange meeting. I read it out of curiosity. Based on my current experience, I may not be able to fully understand the author’s meaning, but as a designer, I think we should also encounter "Wittgen Stan’s house".

Description
This book is a dystopian novel with a strong idealistic temperament created by the famous architect Liu Jiakun. Architect Ouyang Jiangshan wants to build a new city and use architecture to reshape people's souls. This whimsical plan was named "Mingyue Conception". This tough idealist is approaching success step by step, but in the end he fails in an uproar. His failure is more meaningful than his success. This is a novel that only an architect can write. It is full of the charming details of Mingyue New City—this "paradise on earth" that has never existed before is shining in his pen; and the unexpected tragedy at the end, It's more like ending up with the ideals of a generation.
Reason for Recommendation
The sixth book is Mingyue Conception written by Mr. Jia Kun in his early years. In fact, what really attracted me was the last postscript of the book: Am I doing architecture in the Southwest? For me, this book has a special meaning. It helped me strengthen my desire to be an independent architect. Because I also want to build in the Southwest, I also want to have a bigger desk, and I also want to make money with my own design. For architects, the book can be said to be an example of a main course that is not a hard dish, so in terms of personal emotions, this book is also worth recommending.

The second edition of this book bears the imprint of the times. The old binding method and the large-format drawings with folded inner pages can make people feel the garden heartily. In my undergraduate years, I loved visiting gardens when I first came into contact with gardens in my sophomore year. I often took a truck to Suzhou on weekends and lived near the gardens. I woke up early and wandered around the gardens with no tourists. At that time, Suzhou was not too commercial. This book is also a "sacred book of decompression" that has often accompanied me through difficult times in the past two years. Every time I read it, I will find the feeling and comfort of walking around the garden.

Description
From 1947 to 1953, Le Corbusier (1887—1965) created 19 lithographs and a corresponding number of poems. The structure of the book is a tree-like structure of 19 lithographs arranged in a staggered manner. (There is a hand-drawn structural drawing imitating the Orthodox icon screen in the front of the catalog and at the end of the text to help us understand the book) to build, and it is divided into 7 rows according to the letters A-G. Each row echoes the environment, thoughts, body, integration, characteristics, dedication and tools in turn. This can be seen as an artistic realization of his world vision, or as a kind of self-portrait. This collection of poems and paintings may be the best way to understand the architect's theory.
Reason for Recommendation
There should be many architects who regard Le Corbusier as an idol, and I am no exception. During my study in the UK, I took time to make a pilgrimage to Europe and traveled a lot of his works. When I first look at the prints, I feel puzzled, and the verses are slightly obscure. Now when I look back and read the poem with this print, I will feel different feelings. From the print I can see the church of Langxiang, the apartment in Marseille, the model villain, the five elements, the self-portrait, and so on. I think the lattice diagram like the icon screen is the structural diagram of Cobb's architectural thought system. The seven parts may be the core points of the structure. No matter what I understand is right or wrong, I think every architect should think about architecture and build his own architectural thought system through practice.
