    Reason for Recommendation

This book was written by Arthur, the founder of the world's largest architectural firm Gensler, who passed away not long ago. As the founder of an architectural firm, I must recommend the  "Bible" of this firm's operations management. I’ve had this book for many years and kept it on the side of my bed. I took it out and read from time to time and could always found new solutions to a problem. The inner pages are circled all over, which even turned to be messy. I place this book on the top of the recommendation list. For one, to recommend it to the generic managers of architectural firms. Also, to push myself in reflection that there is nothing new under the sun.

    Description

This book reveals in depth the mystery of life and career success of I.M. Pei, one of the most important architects of the 20th century and a world-renowned outstanding Chinese. I.M. Pei combined traditional Chinese culture with modernist design and created many exciting and remarkable buildings: the most well-known, such as the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in the United States, the renovation of the Louvre in Paris, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. He not only has profound and unique architectural artistic ideas, but also has extraordinary personal charm and social art: his clients and friends include French President Mitterrand, American President Kennedy, etc.

    Reason for Recommendation

This biography was published in 1997. One of the last recorded works in the book is the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. Pei retired from Pei Copper & Fred Associates at the age of 72 in 1989; that is to say, the Suzhou Museum that he designed in his 90s is not recorded. This book is out of print. I bought it at a premium ten years ago. The mysterious oriental nobleman, the smiling public relations expert, the modernist geometric architecture master, and the enlightenment of many ordinary Chinese architecture students 30 years ago. Perhaps Pei is not as good as Louis Kahn in the purely architectural profession, but he is most in line with the established cognition of the fame of the Orientals. In addition, if an architect’s biography is to be ordered in my mind, in addition to this one, I would recommend "The Biography of Frank Gehry", "The Weight of Your Building—The Biography of Norman Foster", and "Le Corbusier" in turn. Yeah-Born for Modern Times, "Louis Kang Biography", "Architect Tadao Ando", "Until We Build Jerusalem" (Mendelssohn Biography), "Break Ground: Adventures in Life and Architecture-Li Beskind "The Biography of Germany", "The Dream of Architecture" (Biography of Richard Rogers).

    Description

"Love in the Time of Cholera" is the first novel written by García Márquez after he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. It tells a love epic that spans more than half a century, exhausting all the possibilities of love: loyal, secretive, rough, shy, platonic, slutty, fleeting, life-and-death... Marl Kers once said: "This is my best work, it is my creation from the heart." It is one of the most important classic literary masterpieces of the 20th century, and is known as "the greatest love novel in the history of mankind".

    Reason for Recommendation

This book is a masterpiece by García Márquez. Last year’s readings during the lockdown of the epidemic had little to do with cholera: a not-so-pure male protagonist, but dying old age, finally came together with his first love. I think this is not only love but also the faith of youth. This loneliness is the answer given day and night in fifty-three years, seven months, and eleven days: "It turned out to be life, not death. There is no end".

    Description

This is an autobiographical literary work. The original book has six volumes, but the second has been lost, and now only four volumes remain (there are so-called "full texts", the latter two are fakes.) The book describes the ordinary home between the author and his wife Life, ups and downs, and wandering around. The words are simple and the emotions are sincere. The predecessors once had the comment of "the beautiful triangle, the heart of reading". The text of this book is not long, but it is popular for literature lovers and researchers Pay attention to it and have a wide impact.

    Reason for Recommendation

If you look at this book and "Love in the Time of Cholera" side by side, there is a clear distinction between Chinese and foreign views on love. This book is a small essay recorded by the Suzhou literati Shen Fu in the Ming Dynasty. Between the lines is the appreciation of the talent and elegance of his beloved wife "Yun". Mr. Lin Yutang said that Yun is "the most lovely woman in Chinese literature"; It is true that in that era, a scholar was unable to make a better life for his family. His wife died young, which was very embarrassing. It is what Li Bai said: "Floating life is like a dream, and it is a joy".

(William T.Rowe)

    Description

This book uses solid information and rigorous arguments to study the development of Chinese cities and capitalism, and reproduces the development history of Hankou, a typical Chinese city in modern times. At the same time, the author proves that Max Weber’s so-called “China has not formed a single The argument of "mature urban community" is a great misunderstanding of the development of Chinese society. The author's two works on Hankou, a Chinese city, are masterpieces in the study of Chinese new urban history and social history by historians at home and abroad. In the field of Chinese history research, they can be said to be immortal works.

    Reason for Recommendation

The book written by the American William Rowe in 1989, proves that Hankou, a commercial city in the modern sense, had a civil society and civil autonomy as early as the end of the Qing Dynasty. I am interested in the original core area of Hankou, which is currently within the first ring of Hankou: it is a mixture of concession areas, wharf areas, churches, Lifen and Shantung. So far, this area is still the most attractive area in Wuhan, although it has been disrupted by the urbanization process. Just as William Rowe said in the preface of the 2006 Chinese translation, "I am more nostalgic for the quiet Wuhan that I was familiar with 1981".

This book is the second part of "Murakami Takashi Series Trilogy" created by Japan's super-popular media brand "Zhijapan". Takashi Murakami personally disclosed his professional experience and success secrets, carefully interpreted the "Four Elements of Art Appreciation", and brought readers into the world of contemporary art. And especially open the creative ideas and production process, how to create a unique work? How to make a debut as an artist? How to get a place in the art market? What should I pay attention to when dealing with galleries and agents? Murakami exposed the "hidden rules" of the art world and looked forward to the development trend of contemporary art. The book contains exquisite color pictures of Takashi Murakami's works, interspersed with representative works in the field of contemporary art, more than 70 copyrighted pictures and detailed annotations. "Life is short, art is permanent", "Murakami Takashi's Art Combat Theory" is a spiritual food for fighting to change the status quo.

    Reason for Recommendation

In my book list, there are some small books from neighboring countries in East Asia. From Okakura Tenshin’s "The Book of Tea", Tanizaki Junichiro’s "Industry Praise", Suzuki Taichu’s "Zen and Life", Kurokawa Masauki’s "Japan" "Eight Aesthetic Consciousness", "Making Clothes" by Hiroshi Sugimoto, "Design in Design" by Kenya Hara...There are no fewer than dozens of books. I have been paying attention to these, the purpose is to learn from and explore how Chinese culture, which is also the Eastern culture, can find modernity without losing tradition in the new era. "Takashi Murakami's Art Battle Theory" is only one of the series of Takashi Murakami that he recently put on hand. He especially said that from the future back to the present, let's see where you are in the "now" of art; The reverse thinking of "sealing the present" can change the face of this world.

    Description

From 1971 to 1978, Xu Xiaohu conducted a marathon interview with Mr. Wang Jiqian, a collector, connoisseur, and painter of Chinese calligraphy and painting on the issue of Chinese calligraphy and painting. Under Xu Xiaohu's ingenious questioning, Wang Jiqian tried his best to explain the big problem of "can only be understood but cannot be explained" in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. With sometimes sharp and sometimes funny questions and answers, the two put forward various incisive views on the era style, pen and ink characteristics, pen techniques, and composition layout of ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy.

    Reason for Recommendation

Wang Jiqian, Lin Yutang, and Suzuki Dazhuo are all people who can convey Eastern traditions in a Western context. This book should be read in conjunction with "An Illustrated Book of the History of Chinese Painting" and "Style and World Changes-Ten Commentaries on Chinese Painting". In addition, this book is a record of conversations. I really like the record mode of conversation records, so I also bought a lot of books about this kind of conversation, such as "Nishizawa Ryue Dialogue Collection" and "Dialogue China—— Interview with James Sanz and 32 for Contemporary Artists" etc. The advantage of the talk collection is that you are on the scene. You can directly understand the deep meaning of the interviewer, which is better than reading a bunch of words alone.

    Description

This book includes nearly a hundred artists and their representative works, combs the origins and changes of more than 20 modern art schools, and outlines the development process of modern art. What has happened to art in the past 150 years? Why is it that today, something that seems to be able to be made by a five-year-old child is actually a masterpiece in art history? Is this art? This must be art! —— Malevich’s black square, Mondrian’s colorful grid, Duchamp’s urinal...Art no longer has to be related to beauty, it is more about ideas. After uncovering the mysteries of those bizarre and varied art schools, they are actually surprisingly simple, but wonderful and even great. If we can still vaguely recognize the "original" appearance of art from Monet's "Sunrise" and Van Gogh's "Starry Sky" more than 150 years ago, then one hundred and fifty years later, Andy Waugh Hall's canned soup, Damien Hirst's marinated shark, and Tracy Emin's messy bed are enough to show us other possibilities of art. Looking back on the rebellion of modern art for a century and a half, we have witnessed how generation after generation has become more rebellious, bold, and chaotic. Behind this is the endless questioning of "what is art" by artists, and their response and resistance to the world around them. The story of modern art continues, and may never be completed.

    Reason for Recommendation

We are still in the constant development of modern art, and so is architecture. Knowing more about art is of great benefit to architecture itself. Architecture is a slow-moving elephant, and art is a monkey leaping in the woods; as art has developed to this day, generations of artists have left their names in the path of resisting the previous generation. However, since Duchamp signed the urinal in 1917, the conceptual art model of "no painting" has been around for 100 years, and art and architecture have been scrolled in. Where does the new art go, and where are the new architectural concepts? Actively thinking about the possibility of the future, this is the ultimate proposition for everyone to fight against involution.
