    Design with Nature

    Ian L. McHarg

VOL29—Shma

    简介

    Description

In the twenty-five years since it first took the academic world by storm,"Design With Nature" has done much to redefine the fields of landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, and ecological design. It has also left a permanent mark on the ongoing discussion of mankind's place in nature and nature's place in mankind within the physical sciences and humanities. "Design With Nature" offers a practical blueprint for a new, healthier relationship between the built environment and nature. In so doing, it provides nothing less than the scientific, technical, and philosophical foundations for a mature civilization that will, as Lewis Mumford ecstatically put it in his Introduction to the 1969 edition, "replace the polluted, bulldozed, machine-dominated, dehumanized, an explosion-threatened world that is even now disintegrating and disappearing before our eyes."

    Reason for Recommendation

With the existing climate emergency impact the earth is facing, the importance of this 50-year old book is more evident than ever. There is only one way to live, that is to live with the natural force and not against it. McHarg argued that it is best to plan and design according to the ecology and the character of the landscape. The book hopes for a better world, and Shma is aiming for the same.

    Reason for Recommendation

As a landscape architect and an urban sketcher, I can fully enjoy travelling when I understand the city that I'm in when I can orientate myself on how the streets and communities relate. This book helps me understand great cities around the world with its coverage of a wide variety of street types (one particular canal included), their surrounding urban spaces, and physical characteristics, which makes them great. The analysis, statistics, illustration (dimensions, plans, and sections are on the same scale for the good of comparison), perspectives, and drawings of design details provide the sense and feel of the urban lives in those cities as if I am really there.

    Gardens Are For People

Thomas D. Church, Grace Hall, Michael Laurie

VOL29—Shma

    简介

    Description

This classic of landscape architecture has been required reading for the residential garden design professional, student, and generalist since its publication in 1955. Gardens Are for People contains the essence of the author‘s design philosophy and much practical advice. Called "the last great traditional designer and the first great modern designer," Church was one of the central figures in the development of the modern California garden. Church viewed the garden as a logical extension of the house, with one extending naturally into the other. His plans reflect the personality and practical needs of the homeowner, as well as a pragmatic response to the logistical demands of the site.

We began our landscape architecture studies by designing small gardens, and this book partly helps me understand the foundation of design principles from respecting the site as well as climate, function, and art to keeping the ultimate simplicity. The most important aspect of designs is the needs of people who use them.

    简介

    Description

Today's landscape architecture is looking for a modern and independent language. Dieter Kienast's design has great poetic charm. In the process of safely reducing to several elements and basic design principles, he skillfully handled the contrast between nature and man-made, order and chaos. In addition to plants, his materials include concrete, glass, and steel. He collaborates with architects and artists to create cultural spaces that are sensitive to the present and tell about it. The first "Garden" proposed for the first time private gardens and parks. The first volume focused on the private garden designed by Kienast. The second volume showed the public space created by Kienast, revealing how he handled the integration of the most diverse needs of many people. Complex tasks.

This book takes us through to understanding the effect of city designs in relation to human behaviour and emotions through various examples around the world, bringing us to start reflecting on our own city. The question would be if our city is "happy" yet? I believe our living quality can be lifted and happiness could start from good city planning.

    Auftritte Scenes

    Alban Janson

VOL29—Shma

    简介

    Description

Is it possible to interpret the urban spaces in ancient Venice as we would analyse those in Los Angeles or Rotterdam? This book is an attempt to analyse Venice's Campi in the same way we would consider public space today. It focuses on those places so essential to public life and which offer an endless number of variations in our urban surroundings. The continual fascination with Venice's Campi shows that this feature of urban architecture still has a significant role to play in modern life and they have a great creative potential to offer today's architects and planners. This publication documents Venice's squares in detail, analysing them precisely. Extensive visual material including plans, photographs of models, and photo sequences of the actual squares complement the texts to provide a comprehensive reference on this topic.

    Richard Haag

    William S. Saunders

VOL29—Shma

    简介

    Description

The work of landscape architect Richard Haag is thoroughly grounded in the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, yet it has won international recognition for its universally appreciated artistic subtlety. His two designs for the Seattle area, Bloedel Reserve and Gasworks Park are among the most celebrated modern American landscape projects. This is the first book to explore these works in detail, both in terms of Haag's design process and of the impact of these projects on other architects. The included essays discuss such themes as aspects of the sublime in Haag's work, the relation between Bloedel Reserve and Eastern philosophy and mysticism, and how Haag has been a mentor to other designers.

    Reason for Recommendation

A documentary of several iconic projects by  Richard Haag, an American Landscape Architect. This book explains his concept and thought process which really caught my attention, specifically with Bloedel Reserve or as known as the Sequence Garden. The most famous piece that reflects designing with nature transcribing them into visitor’s hearts with its own little pocket parks intriguingly hidden in the forest.
