    Description

The book proposes a new theory about architectural design, architecture and planning. The core of the theory is that members of society set the world order in which they live according to their own state of existence. This ancient way fundamentally forms the basis of new post-industrial buildings, which were created by people.

    Reason for Recommendation

The style of this book is very close to the "Tao De Jing". It has always been regarded as the modern Western "Tao De Jing". The language is simple and the sense of rhythm is very strong when we read aloud. The deep meaning is easy to understand but difficult to express. Professor Alexander used this style to convey more profound architectural philosophy, exploring the eternal way of architecture between architecture and nature, man and architecture, even emotion and inanimate matter. This is a philosophy book exemplified by architecture. The book has completely changed my perception of architecture as a physical entity, and also changed the way I think in the design process.

    Description

This book discusses and introduces the classical gardens in China's Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing areas. It is the first garden monograph in China to adopt modern methods for surveying, mapping and photography. Before the Anti-Japanese War, the author visited famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River for field investigation, surveying and mapping photography, and wrote this book based on many years of research experience. This book is divided into two parts: text and pictures. The text part includes five chapters: gardening, rockery, evolution, current situation, and miscellaneous knowledge, discussing the traditional characteristics and general principles of Chinese gardening, explaining the art of rockery, introducing and evaluating the evolution, current situation, and artistic characteristics of famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. In the second edition, the article "Exams with the Garden" and some pictures were added, and more than 340 pictures were collected in total. Some of the gardens mentioned in the book have now been broken or abandoned so that the information in this area are of particular historical value.

    Reason for Recommendation

As the earliest garden research scholar in China, Tong Liao began to organize and research Jiangnan gardens in the 1930s. From the completion of the manuscript in 1937 to the official publication in 1963, the book experienced many twists and turns. In the book, Tong Liao not only left us a large number of historical photos and surveying and mapping information of Jiangnan gardens, but also discussed the theory of Chinese gardening with scientific methodology, and proposed the "three realms" of Chinese gardens. Chinese architecture and gardens are inseparable. Architecture and gardens complement each other, so that the understanding of the word "sentiment" by gardens and architecture is far more than skills and methods.

    Description

The book is a rethinking of the entire modern architectural tradition. The concept of construction discussed by Frampton regards architecture as a craft of construction. It poses a powerful challenge to the mainstream ideas that are obsessed with postmodern art and presents a convincing and innovative approach to architecture. Indeed, Frampton’s rationale is that modern architecture is not only closely related to space and abstract form, but also to the same vital degree as structure and construction.

    Reason for Recommendation

As an important masterpiece of modern architectural historiography, Frampton provided a clear and durable understanding of architectural theory and design in "Constructive Cultural Studies", and explored the complex process of technological invention in the cultural development. Through the study of construction methods and construction culture, as well as the analysis of many architects’ personal works and creative processes, a picture of the slow evolution of the concept of structural authenticity and modern commemorative concepts has been outlined, making us further realize that technological inventions are related to Architects' form creation complements each other, and the constructive essence contained in the continuous form creation.

    Description

The book tells that vernacular architecture is the most simple, honest, lively, and humane part of traditional Chinese architecture. They not only have a high historical and cultural understanding value, but they may also have some direct reference value for construction workers.

    Reason for Recommendation

Vernacular architecture is the simplest, most straightforward, most lively, and most humane part of Chinese traditional architecture. Vernacular architecture comes from vernacular culture, which depends on the land. It is a regional culture, which is different from the strong convergence of temple culture, scholar-official culture and market culture. Rural culture and vernacular architecture are ever-changing, colorful, and diverse. This book studies the various types and characteristics of Chinese vernacular architecture, and explores the formation and development of vernacular architecture through history, culture, society, and folklore. In addition to the study of vernacular architecture itself, the book is more about a deep discussion of its inner vernacular culture.

    Description

"Tadao Ando's losing streak in a row" is another influential work compiled by Tadao Ando following the book "Tadao Ando on Architecture" based on the content of his lectures in the Department of Architecture of the University of Tokyo. In this book, Ando reviewed his work over the past years, described the challenges and struggles in the face of difficulties. In the face of the "failures" that challenged many architectural competitions, Ando did not compromise to the difficulties, and constantly  challenge the construction with his extraordinary courage and beliefs. The book reflects Ando's persistent pursuit of architectural design work and the spirit of his perseverance. This is an inspiring and rare good book for young people; especially for young architects and architecture students, it has important reference significance.

"Creation stems from adversity, and architecture is battle. At the beginning, it was all unsatisfactory things. Most of the things I wanted to try ended in failure. Nevertheless, I still gambled on the only remaining possibility and moved forward in the shadows. Seize an opportunity, continue to move towards the next goal, seize the tiny light of hope, and live desperately.” As an architect, I always think of the powerful words in this book every time I face the weakness of reality.

    Description

This book explains how the Huaxia Fringe forms and changes in a specific resource competition and distribution environment, how Huaxia uses historical memory and amnesia to condense and expand, and how the people on the Huaxia fringe use historical memory and amnesia to become Huaxia or non-Huaxia. Taking the Chinese as an example, the author uses historical, archaeological and anthropological data to explore the relationship between resource competition and distribution related to human ethnic identity, the process of social historical memory and amnesia, the social nature of paradigm and marginal views, and historical Realistic meaning and other issues. The author hopes that this book can help us to think about our own identity, that is, why we should declare ourselves as Chinese, and think about the current issue of Chinese identity on both sides of the strait.

When we draw a circle on a piece of paper, it is actually its "edge" that makes it look like a circle. So what's the edge of it in a group, in a culture? How does this edge penetrate, expand, and dissipate? This book studies the phenomenon of anthropological ethnic groups through the discussion of the formation, expansion, changes, and continuation of the Chinese ethnic group. The reason why I recommend this book originated from my personal research on Qiang architecture. As the Qiang architecture between Han and Tibetan areas reflects certain spontaneous, transitional and defensive features. These features cannot be produced only by architecture. The study of academic theory must be done through the integration of history, culture, ethnic group and other disciplines, and architecture has become the material carrier of these complex contents.

    Description

From the beginning of life signs 100,000 years ago to the history of human development in the 21st century where capital and technology are intertwined. One hundred thousand years ago, there were at least six races on the earth. Why are we only left today? We used to be just an unremarkable ethnic group in a corner of Africa, having the same impact on the ecology of the planet as fireflies, orangutans or jellyfish. Why can we climb to the top of the biological chain and eventually become the master of the earth? From the cognitive revolution, the agricultural revolution to the scientific revolution, do we really understand ourselves? Are we happier? Do we know where and why money and religion came from? Why did the empires created by mankind decline and rise one by one? Why does almost every society on earth have the notion that men are superior to women? Why has monotheism become the most widely accepted religion? How did science and capitalism become the most important tenets of modern society? Clarify the major context that affects human development? Clarify the major context that affects human development, and explore the root causes of human culture, religion, law, state, and credit. This is a magnificent brief history of mankind, with more knowledge and writing in lowercase, allowing mankind to re-examine themselves.

Architecture is built for people, so what are people? How did we define ourselves, and how did we become what we are now? Where will we go in the future? Could it really be as written in the book, "Have the power of God, but be irresponsible, greedy, and don't even know what you want. The dangers of the world, I'm afraid this is more." If we don't know what we are, what does architecture mean to us?

It reflects the changing history of Latin America over the past century. The work incorporates mysterious elements such as myths and legends, folk tales, religious allusions, and cleverly blends reality and illusion, showing a magnificent world of imagination. It is one of the most important classic literary masterpieces of the 20th century.

When I read the long-lasting heavy rain described in the book, the rain would overflow from the pages of the book. When I read that Aureliano held a parchment scroll and read the fate of the family for nearly a hundred years, the page seemed to become a sheepskin scroll. When you read that the city of mirage is wiped out by the final hurricane, nothing seems to have happened to you. A book that you will never let go of when you first read it is full of reality and magic, only lonely and eternal.
