The Landscape of Man / Geoffrey Allen Jellicoe, Susan Jellicoe
简介
Description
From small gardens to complete cities, humans have always molded their environment to express or symbolize ideas – power, order, comfort, harmony, pleasure, mystery. It is Geoffrey and Susan Jellicoe's distinction to have realized that these are manifestations of a single process and to have linked them all together.
Taking twenty-eight 'cultures' from Ancient Mesopotamia to the Post-Renaissance West, the authors first summarize the social and intellectual background, then describe how this is expressed in terms of landscape, and finally demonstrate their case in a series of picture spreads showing what actually happened.

The Garden in Motion/ Gilles Clément
简介
Description
The Garden in Motion
The name Garden in Motion originates in the physical migration of vegetal species within a given area. Flowers that germinate on a path force the gardener to decide between maintaining the flowers or the path. "The Garden in Motion" recommends maintaining those species that decide where they wish to grow.
In this work, Gilles Clément develops an observation of the cycles of appearance of the structural and spatial organizations of the "garden", highlighting the non-stability of an apparently stable space-time. Hence the term "movement", indicating the variation specific to plants, which inspires the landscaper Gilles Clément: instead of confining plants in order to organize a creation, he lets the plantations "redraw" the garden permanently.

A Pattern language: Towns, Buildings, Construction / Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray Silverstein
简介
Description
A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction is a 1977 book on architecture, urban design, and community livability. It was authored by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, and Murray Silverstein of the Center for Environmental Structure of Berkeley, California, with writing credits also to Max Jacobson, Ingrid Fiksdahl-King, and Shlomo Angel. Decades after its publication, it is still one of the best-selling books on architecture.
The book creates a new language, what the authors call a pattern language derived from timeless entities called patterns. As they write on page xxxv of the introduction, "All 253 patterns together form a language." Patterns describe a problem and then offer a solution. In doing so the authors intend to give ordinary people, not only professionals, a way to work with their neighbors to improve a town or neighborhood, design a house for themselves, or work with colleagues to design an office, workshop, or public building such as a school.

S, M, L, XL / Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Mau
简介
Description
"S, M, L, XL" is by far the most important comprehensive architectural text of Koolhaas that integrates architectural design and urban theory. Whether it is from the time span of this book (the late 1970s to mid-1990s), or from the richness of the text (covering information in various fields such as architecture, humanities, society, politics, economy, and cities), or even from the text considering its own size (more than 1,300 pages, such as a huge dictionary), it is not an exaggeration to call it a "major work". The discussion through the three aspects of the text, image, and narrative provides us with an excellent reference case of "architectural expression" to consider.
