The Eyes of the Skin,Juhani Pallasmaa
简介
Description
The book was first published in 1996 and has become a classic of architectural theory. The third edition satisfies the readers’ desire for a better understanding of Pallasmar’s ideological environment by providing new articles by the architect and educator Peter MacKeith. This text combines both a biographical portrait of Pallasma and an overview of his architectural ideas, its origins and its relationship with the past and present and the broad context of Nordic and European thought.
The focus of this article is on Pallasma's architectural approach to basic humanity, insight and sensitivity, and at the same time, he compares his drawings with photographs of his own works.

This book was recommended by a Polish intern girl in the studio. It is about the phenomenological study of architecture. I don't remember how many times I read it, but every time I would discover something new. In the late 1950s, Steen Elier Rasmussen proposed "experience architecture". In the 1990s, Finnish architects Juhani Pallasmaa, Alberto Perez-Gomez, and Steven Holl initiated phenomenological reflection. The book is the preface to this movement.
The first part of the book criticizes the impact of vision on the world since the Renaissance. In the second part, Juhani Pallasmaa believes that architects should consider the richness and complexity of sensory experience in addition to visual design. These complexity connects the memory and imagination of human. Most of his arguments come from the fields of philosophy (especially the classics of phenomenology) and psychology. I personally think that this book can bring readers another kind of reflection on their own perception in today's flood of graphics and information technology.

Les objets singuliers,Jean Baudrillard / Jean Nouvel
简介
Description
What is a single object? It can be ideas, buildings, colors, feelings, people... In the face of media reports and cultural globalization, in the face of rising value levels and the generalization of ideas composed of opinions, where can we find strange things and object? How to define them, create them, protect them, identify them?
Through dialogue around this topic, Jean Nouvel and Jean Baudrillard resolved other basic issues related to the coming years. They imagined how the city of tomorrow will be, and wondered why the ideal of transparency has gradually penetrated into all fields from politics to architecture. Finally, they have to face the difficulty of freedom. Therefore, an article about the singularity animated their work and research. This also determines a certain kind of moral, charming and passionate writing to cope with the great changes in the future.

This book is a textbook designated by the teacher when I was in school. I felt very obscure when I read it. After that, I took it out and turned it over every time I felt unwilling. After reading it on and off for ten years, I gradually understood something. Perhaps it is because architects and philosophers always collide with exciting sparks, such as the contributions of Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman to deconstruction in the 1980s. Objets singuliers is an early dialogue between the philosopher Jean Baudrillard and the architect Jean Nouvel. In the book, Baudrillard introduces Nouvel into the philosophical system through simple questions, speaking of illusion, nihilism and reality, contemporary aesthetics, temptation, and modernity. Discussions on architecture such as culture, transparency, and planning can trigger infinite thinking.

Ornament,Antoine Picon
简介
Description
Ornament was alway condemned by Modernism and compared to a 'crime' by Adolf Loos. It has made a spectacular return in contemporary architecture. This is typified by the works of well-known architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Sauerbruch Hutton, Farshid Moussavi Architecture and OMA.
There is no doubt that these new ornamental tendencies are inseparable from innovations in computer technology. The proliferation of developments in design software has enabled architects to experiment afresh with texture, colour, pattern and topology. Though inextricably linked with digital tools and culture, Antoine Picon argues that some significant traits in ornament persist from earlier Western architectural traditions. He defines these as the 'subjective' - the human interaction that ornament requires in both its production and its reception, and between politics.
Contrary to the message conveyed by the founding fathers of modern architecture, traditional ornament was not meant only for pleasure. It conveyed vital information about the designe of buildings as well as about the rank of their owners. As such, it participated in the expression of social values, hierarchies and order. By bringing previous traditions in ornament under scrutiny, Picon makes us question the political issues at stake in today's ornamental revival. What does it tell us about present-day culture? Why are we presently so fearful of meaning in architecture? Could it be that by steering so vehemently away from symbolism, contemporary architecture is evading any explicit contribution to collective values?

Antoine Picon
In 2016, after reading this book during my business trip, I realized something suddenly, and then I began to slowly understand these visible facades and the invisible connections behind them. Architectural ornament was regarded as a sin by Adolphus in the 20th century and abandoned by modernism. In recent years, with the development of parametric and 3D printing technology, it has returned to people's vision.
In this book, Antoine Picon analyzes the relationship between traditional ornament and contemporary ornament on the architectural level with designers, producers, owners and viewers at different stages, as well as economic, social and political ornament. The book uses a lot of classic facade illustrations from historical and modern periods to help us think and criticize the skins of historical and modern buildings.

PARIS HAUSSMANN,LAN - Benoit Jallon et Umberto Napolitano FBC - Franck Boutté
简介
Description
Throughout the 19th century, Paris has undergone profound changes throughout the city. The governor of the Seine Province, the French capital, Georges Eugène Hausmann, is responsible for the master plan for the reconstruction of the capital, reflecting the public works that are still shaping the city this century.
This book explores the characteristics of this homogeneous and polymorphic city, which is the result of a long process of "Ottomanization". Benoît Jallon, Umberto Napolitano and Franck Boutté conducted extensive research on roads, public spaces, buildings, and neighborhoods for the first time to explore the ability of the Haussmann model to meet modern challenges that the city is facing today. In addition to a large number of new researches, the book also provides nearly 500 illustrations, including maps, photos, plans and axonometric drawings.

PARIS HAUSSMANN is a research book launched by Lan Architects and FBC Environmental Architects in 2017. I want to recommend this book not because it has won awards, nor because of its exquisite axonometric drawings, but because it shows typological image description of the various architectural elements of the Haussmann building in Paris, and through the data comparison with other cities in the world, we can clearly see different cities at the same scale, such as New York, Moscow, Manila, Tokyo, Dakar Visual comparison of different blocks in urban texture, accessibility, population density, convenience, service facilities, etc.

Álvaro Siza Vieira: A Pool in the Sea是Siza和Kenneth Frampton关于他早年Leça da Palmeira游泳池项目的对话记录。
Álvaro Siza Vieira: A Pool in the Sea is a conversation transcript between Siza and Kenneth Frampton about his early Leça da Palmeira swimming pool project. As for the reasons for recommendation, first of all, in landscape architecture, I like this design method that can make full use of natural forces to make the building disappear in the site. Secondly, in terms of space experience, the Leça da Palmeira swimming pool has poetic concrete details, the lighting borrowed from Portuguese houses in the 19th century, and the use of waste wood recovered from Riga to make wooden structures have brought us endless surprises.

Michel Corajoud
简介
Description
在这本书中,景观设计师Michel Corajoud(他在1992年获得了大奖赛冠军,并在2003年赢得了城市主义大奖)将他在整个职业生涯中在各种情况下撰写和出版的20本书合在一起。
In this book, landscape architect Michel Corajoud (who won the Grand Prix in 1992 and the Urbanism Grand Prix in 2003) composes 20 books written and published under various circumstances throughout his career to put together.
We know that he is a landscape architect, relying on his many accomplishments as a pilot (in Lyon, Bordeaux, Paris, etc.), the main direction of living ideas expressed around basic intuition. Deeply explored the future development of the landscape.
Reason for Recommendation
Michel Gorajoud's influence in the European landscape circle in the last century was the same as the influence of Le Corbusier in the architectural circle in the last century. His contribution is not only in the innovation of landscape theory in the 20th century, but also in training a large number of today's landscape masters such as Michel Desvigne, Gille Clément, and Henry Bava ( Henri Bava) and so on.
This book not only outlines Michel Gorajoud's landscape theory, but also introduces some of his reforms and reflections in teaching. Today when we talk about education, we have rarely seen Michel Gorajoud's analysis of the relationship between contemporary issues and architectural education, and lack of original thinking. In the teaching reform, we seem to lack a kind of high-level reflection and creation.

The Story of Buildings ,Patrick Dillon/Stephen Biesty
简介
Description
The author of the book, Patrick Dillon, is a British architect and historian who has won a Pulitzer Prize. Illustrator Stephen Bisty is a well-known British hand-drawn illustrator, an internationally renowned master of profile drawings, and DK queen illustrator.
A hand-painted history of global architecture, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author will tell you the past and present of architecture; masters of section diagrams illustrate 16 handed down buildings. The story of the architecture traces back 3,000 years of human construction longitudinally, from the beginning of primitive people living in caves to avoid beasts, to the end of the 21st century when British architects built straw-brick houses in order to live in harmony with nature, forming a perfect closed loop, which implies the fate that accompanies the history of architecture and human history.
16 handed down buildings such as the Pyramid, Parthenon, Pantheon, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Crystal Palace shine like stars in the galaxy of classical architecture, Renaissance architecture, Gothic, Baroque, Bauhaus and other architectural genres. The unusual story behind each handed down building once again draws readers into a turbulent era, overlooking the evolution of architectural genres and the changes of the times.

Each building has its own story, and these stories are not the artificial stories we told today when we reported the plan, but the true stories behind the unpretentious but interesting buildings. In fact, this is a picture book given to children by Pulitzer masters. But every time I turn it over, it can always give me a lot of original thinking. Why is there such a building, Why is there such a standard, Can we make a change? All the stories are in the painting.
