Sutra
The designer takes you through contemporary drama: Sutra

Sutra
Since its premiere in 2008, Sutra has and continues to tour, currently touring more than 60 cities in 28 countries/regions. After twelve years of world tour concerts, Sutra has become an extremely important drama work in the contemporary art world, full of unlimited imagination. This is an epoch-making work, a groundbreaking work of the so-called "Kung Fu Dance Theater", a new art form inadvertently created by Shaolin monks and their Europeans.
Boundary-crossing is the central concept of the piece: seen through the change in the central character, Larbi, from an outsider to a Shaolin kung fu warrior in the end. Throughout the show, Sidi transformed from a puppeteer, an onlooker, a solo dancer, a playful adversary to a community member who is finally an integral part of the Shaolin kung fu world. Inspired by his physical and mental changes after a few months in the Shaolin Temple, Sidi interprets his understanding of Shaolin martial arts from a Western perspective.

Choreography
Throughout the performance, the martial art (dance) between the 16 monks and the young Sami and Sidi shows Sidi's clever choreography, which fully embodies the struggle between strength and tranquillity. Sidi and the monk used the physical movement of the dance to simulate the confrontation between boa, scorpion, hawk, toad, and fierce beast, combining hardness and softness. He has a knack for setting up many details. At the beginning of the performance, Sidi is sitting on a box with the little Novice Monk. Sidi points a finger at the little novice monk and keeps moving around, like communication, like provocation. Towards the end of the show, the young Novice's emotional transformation towards Sidi is an echo of the beginning. At the same time, Sidi's clothes are matched with a suit and the lower coat is in the style of monk's coat. The monks also change from monk's coat to suit in the middle of the performance, which indicates the fusion and transformation between China and the West.

装置/Installation
Antony sets up a series of moving and changing wooden boxes of human height for the whole play, symbolizing the space of each person. The monks gave the box its soul through martial arts and dance, bringing it to life. Antony shows the changes of the world in such ways as the simulated construction of the city wall and the blooming lotus flower, which embodies the life philosophy of many monasteries. Including sleeping and meditation, carrying boxes walking, everyone has their own space, and this space is only one person's area.

Music
Simon's music is also an important part of the play. Although the whole music is played by western instruments, the sound of bells can be heard from percussion instruments occasionally, reflecting more Oriental spirit. The cadence is a match made in heaven with Sidi's choreography and Anthony's ever-changing boxes, both melodious and airy. Music performers hidden behind the curtain frequently appear on the curtain under the constant change of projected lights. Their live music fully arouses the audience's senses, realizes the emotional connection between performers and viewers, and presents an excellent audio-visual feast.

《Passage》 is Anthony Gormley's 2017 moving in “Still Moving” at The Long Museum of Fine Arts in Shanghai. The exhibition is Antony's first major show in China and the first in Asia for his groundbreaking installation, 《Critical Mass II》. 《Passage》 is a corten steel corridor nearly 16 meters long, creating a space of light. The cross-section of Passage is a similar geometry-image of the human body, there was only one entrance to the corridor, while the audience into the corridor of humanoid, walking in all the time, the light will gradually disappear, visual sense will slowly disappear, after completely into the darkness, our space in this originally in the narrow corridor was suddenly infinite extension, no boundaries. When we look back from the darkness, we will suddenly find another world appears in the light, the light and the human form a beautiful world of light.
The audience's sense of the existence of another world is extraordinary, and its inspiration can be traced back to Anthony's past life experience. Antony studied anthropology, archaeology and prehistoric art at Cambridge University before embarking on a career as an artist. After completing his studies, he left the European continent to seek new experiences in Asia, a very different culture and spent three years traveling to Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and studying Buddhism in India. After returning to London, Anthony studied art and began his career as an artist. It was these interests and experiences in religion that led him to become involved in the production of Sutra.
“Stilling Moving“ represents Anthony's focus over the past 40 years, namely "body as space, space as object". “Passage” is both an object and an experience, implying a connection to the body's interior and offering a journey into the dark and unknown, as well as an opportunity to rediscover our relationship to space. In the performance, “Sutra” used a large number of wooden boxes that could be filled with people, and arranged the monks to interpret the state of life in them, sitting, lying and walking, which changed in myriad ways, and interpreted the relationship between space and people from another dimension. The two works use different media and different forms to express Anthony's thoughts on body, space, and object, forming an alternative dialogue across time and space.

Antony Gormley (born 1950) is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human beings stand in relation to nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013.
